How To

HOW IT WORKS

Solar Panels

the solar panels convert the sunlight into useable DC electricity

DC-AC Inverter

the inverter transforms the DC electricity into the more common AC electricity used by most household appliances

Your Electric Loads

the solar energy is then used with in your home during the day when you are producing electricity to cut your reliance on the utility grid

The electric grid

excess electricity you generate is sent to the electric grid and power you need at night is taken from the grid

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to install my system?

Depending on the size of your system and local permitting requirements, we can complete your installation within 90 days from the date of contract signing. The actual installation for a normal home takes our teams about 2-3 days.

For commercial systems, install time with vary depending on the type of system and site conditions. Just shoot us a message and we can let you know quickly the approximate timelines for an install.

Where do the solar panels go?

We have the option of mounting solar panels on your roof or on the ground.

How long do the solar panels last?

Solar panels are designed to last more than 30 years

How do the solar panels get attached to my roof?

Our trained professional install certified mounting hardware engineered to withstand the elements of the weather on your roof and are sealed against water leaks.

Will my property taxes go up with solar panels?

Most states have local and state property tax exemptions. Our renewable energy specialists can assist you in answer these questions.

What if there is a new solar panel in the future? Can I upgrade my equipment?

IGS will always offer you options of upgrading your equipment in the future. Our aim is designing a system which can be expanded as future technologies are available on the marketplace.

What if it’s cloudy? Will my solar panels work?

Solar panels will also produce electricity whether it’s cloudy or sunny. The power output of each solar panel is directly related to how much sunlight is hitting the surface. When its cloudy, less energy hits the solar panels causing a lower power output then when its sunny. Our solar energy models simulate shading and seasonality of your specific site.

How much service / maintenance is required for my system?

It’s easy! Just normal home care. We recommend to make sure there are no debris on the solar panels (large amounts of leaves, limbs, etc), this normally is something that you can have cleared off every few years (depending on your location). If you live in a dusty area, just use water to keep the dust off your panels.

What about snow? YES! It’s always great to safely remove snow from the solar panels (if you can), if not, it will melt off eventually. We factor snow conditions into the annual output of your solar energy system.

Aside from this, nothing! All of our systems are installed with a monitoring application to keep on top of the system health.

What is the system warranty?

All of our solar panels carry a 25 year power warranty. This means the solar panels are warrantied to produce 80% of their power after 25 years!!

How do we know this? We’ve been in business for 20 years. Yes. We have solar panels on our building which are operating perfectly after 20 years of being installed.

Our inverters carry a 12 year standard warranty with option to increase the warranty to 25 years .

Who makes the equipment your installing? We only work with the industries leading, stable and proven companies. Our providers have not only lead the industry in technology innovation, but also in market penetration. Work with the best and don’t worry about the rest.

Is your equipment better then the other guys?

Just ask us! We are 100% transparent and will share the technical facts and comparisons of our equipment to others.

The main point:

We want equipment for you that last. Having a solar panel which is 1% more efficient from a company that will be out of business in 5 years, doesn’t help you when something goes wrong. After 20 years, we’ve watched companies come and go in the solar energy industry. This is our profession and passion, let us guide you.

What are the tax credits?
  • The ITC is a 30 percent tax credit for solar systems on residential (under Section 25D) and commercial (under Section 48) properties. The Section 48 commercial credit can be applied to both customer-sited commercial solar systems and large-scale utility solar farms.
  • The residential and commercial solar ITC has helped the U.S. solar industry grow by more than 10,000% percent since it was implemented in 2006, with an average annual growth of 50% over the last decade alone.
  • Congress passed a multi-year extension of the ITC in 2015:

solar investment tax credit itc schedule 2019-2023

  • Eligibility for the ITC is based on a “commence construction” standard. The IRS issued guidance in June 2018 that explains the requirements taxpayers must meet to establish that construction of a solar facility has begun for purposes of claiming the ITC.
  • The 2015 extension of the ITC has provided market certainty for companies to develop long-term investments that drive competition and technological innovation, which in turn lowers energy costs for consumers.
  • Despite progress, solar energy still only represents 2.5% of energy production in the United States.
  • Moving forward, a tax policy that continues to provide stability and investment opportunity for solar energy should be a part of any national discussions about tax, infrastructure, or decarbonization.
What is net metering?

Net metering is simply the concept of being able to connect your power back to the local utilities grid, with them buying the extra power you are producing (or at least giving you credit for it on your bill).

In NY, you can net meter up to 110% of your 12 month electrical consumption (total energy).

What does this mean? In summer, we produce more energy with our systems, winter = less. During the winter months the credit from the summer carries over on your bill during the periods when your solar system produces less energy.

Still have questions? Just let us know 🙂 We are here to help.

Is ground mount or roof mount better?

Depends! Both are good options.

Ground Mount:

  • Easy to remove snow
  • Easy to clean
  • Service / maintenance is easier
  • Normally are a little more expensive due to trenching, etc.

Roof Mount:

  • Less space required on your property (your roof is already there)
  • Integrated with your home
  • Out of the way – don’t worry about crashing into it with your lawn mower 🙂

What about solar trackers?

We believe in the concept of KEEP IT SIMPLE. More moving parts = more problems. For commercial projects, the use case could be a feasible option, however on residential systems, the additional costs does not warrant the savings.

REAL COST: Remember, costs are not just what you pay TODAY for the parts. Consider after service costs of maintaining the mounting system / solar tracker.

Is my solar system insured?

Yep! You would just contact your current home owners insurance policy to have your system added to the property.

How much does it cost? Always depends 🙂 The good news, for a residential system the premiums shouldn’t be more than $25 a year.

No stress 🙂

I want batteries

The battery discussion can be long. Here are the simple points.

  1. Batteries are expensive
  2. If you don’t have power service (cabin or new home), then it makes sense to consider a battery backup system (as the cost of new service can be as much as the batteries)
  3. If you’re energy cost per kwh is more than $0.18/kwh, then consider batteries (for residential customer), for commercial customers, the model is different.
  4. It’s rather simple these days 🙂
  5. What batteries are better? We can help delete the fancy marketing flare and talk about what’s under the hood. Keep it simple and reliable 🙂

Can I sell my home with solar?

YES!

Why do we renovate things in our home before we sell it?

To increase the resale value of your home 🙂

Why is solar different? Imagine you are buying a home that has a permanent stock dividend for as long as you own the home? AKA the solar system 🙂 The solar system on a new home is constantly saving the new home owner money.

How do I price my new home with solar? In most cases, our customers add the original purchase price of the solar system into the cost of their home! Why? Its a lot easier for new customers to start saving energy immediately then having to go through the entire installation and underwriting process of a new solar system.

Do I get a smart meter with my system?

We install a smart meter to meter your solar systems production. If you’re looking to meter all of your electric usage in your home, just ask us which partner’s services are best.

Do I get a new utility meter with my system?

Depending on your current meter, the utility company may install a new meter (digital). We do not install a new energy meter (unless you’re a commercial PPA customer).
