The University at Albany has just completed the biggest state university rooftop solar system! The rooftop solar PV system is the largest installation project in the 64 campus State University of New York system.
The New York Power Authority has partnered with the University at Albany to develop a 1.9 megawatts solar project. The new system has 4,783 panels. These panels are placed on the Life Science Research building roof and some roofs within the Academic Podium complex. This solar project will reduce the campus’ carbon footprint and will support the New York State solar energy goals by harnessing 70% of electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
“This project is an integral part of the University’s Climate Action Plan and of our commitment to being a national model for campus sustainability,” University at Albany President Havidán Rodriguez says.
The rooftop solar PV system will provide 2.3 gigawatt-hours of energy every year. Officials say that this solar energy will offset 607,556 pounds of carbon dioxide in just one year! This amount is the same as the carbon dioxide emissions from driving 692,594 miles by the average car.
